The Renal Therapy Centre focuses on innovative strategies to achieve exceptional patient and family care in nephrology. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has approved the Centre as a Regional Dialysis Program, in order to help meet the overwhelming demand for haemodialysis in the GTA.
SJHC's Renal Therapy Centre treats patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis who have or are at risk of kidney failure. Through the Renal Management Clinic, an interprofessional team comprised of a nephrologist, nurse, dietitian, pharmacist and social worker, see patients who are at the onset of kidney failure.
The team works with the patient and their families with the goal of managing their health to delay the need for kidney replacement treatment.
The Centre provides the following services:
- Operation of 34 haemodialysis stations at the Health Centre and at the Community Renal Centre
- Management and treatment of patients in Home Peritoneal Dialysis
- Education and support to patients with chronic kidney disease and their caregivers through the Renal Management Clinic
Currently the centre is working with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Provincial Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Joint Branches Initiatives. The aim of this project is to encourage physicians and nephrologists to educate their patients on the benefits of home peritoneal dialysis.
This method of dialysis treatment offers improved timely access to care and promotes a more natural way of removing toxins from the bloodstream. This initiative also focuses on ensuring best practices on patient education, treatment options and follow up care to implement across the province.
