Laboratory Services

Part of our Clinical Support Services, Laboratory Services offers blood bank, chemistry, haematology/coagulation, cytology, infection prevention and control, specimen procurement, microbiology/bacteriology, pathology services, as well as a Phlebotomy/IV (intravenous) nurse team that supports internal and external clinical programs.

The Laboratory performs approximately 2.6 million tests a year, and provides reference testing for a number of hospitals in the GTA. We were the first laboratory in Canada to replace cardiac enzymes with routine Troponin testing for the diagnosis of Acute Myocardial Infarction in 1995. We are also involved in clinical studies, medical technology student education and research activities.

The Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) Team's Mandate is the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infection in patients, staff and visitors. This is achieved through continuous surveillance, epidemiological investigation, education, research, consultation, and policy and procedure development in all hospital programs. The Team works in tandem with the Microbiology Laboratory on a daily basis.
