Childbirth & Parenting Services
Childbirth and Parenting Services offers programs to support pregnant women, new mothers, new fathers, siblings and parents.
There are a wide range of classes and workshops to meet your needs. The Childbirth and Parenting Services include Prenatal Instructors who are registered nurses with a special expertise in prenatal and postnatal care.

All of our programs are open to everyone, whether they are having their baby at St. Joseph's Health Centre or not.

Description
This 6 week course will help prepare you for labour and birth and the postnatal period. Through active participation and group discussion, breastfeeding, the normal newborn will be discussed. Various labour coping techniques (breathing and relaxation) will be demonstrated. Classes run from 6:45 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. on either Monday, Tuesday, OR Wednesday. One night per week for 6 consecutive weeks. Wear comfortable clothes.

Description
We have condensed elements from our regular six-class series in order to accommodate those women who are unable to commit to a full six-week evening program. This mini-series focuses on birthing, and includes a video on birth and a tour of our Family Birthing Centre. Other topics touched on include new mother and baby care, as well as practical demonstrations of breathing and relaxation techniques. We strongly recommend the Breastfeeding for Baby and Newborn Care Workshops outlined below.

Description
The information you need to make an informed choice about how to feed your baby. Each class is from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This program is recommended only for parents enrolled in the Mini Series (see above).
Discussions include:
- The importance of breastfeeding
- The unique qualities of breastmilk
- Understanding how breastmilk is made
- Getting off to a good start: The first week
- Getting a latch that works for mom and baby
- How to know baby is thriving on breastmilk
- Avoiding and overcoming common challenges
- When and where to get help
- Support from others who value breastfeeding: Dads, grandparents and friends

For first time mothers with babies 6 weeks to 3 months of age. This is an opportunity for mothers to connect with other new mothers and discuss newborn issues. This class will be facilitated by a registered nurse. The class runs from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Description
Connect with your baby while you receive the benefits of yoga. This class will allow you to stretch and exercise your tired body, breathe in new energy and take time for yourself to relax in the company of other new mothers. Recommended for all fitness levels.

Registration form for Post-Natal Classes (Gentle Yoga for Moms and Babes and Babytime)
Healthy First Bites is a 2-hour workshop facilitated by our Paediatric Registered Dietitian. This workshop is provided to parents who are ready to offer foods to their infants (4.5 months - 6 months) and would like some assistance with this milestone. The dietitian will help you navigate the latest infant nutrition research, demonstrate the latest feeding gadgets and safe food preparation methods.
