The Family Birthing Centre, located on the 5th Floor, Glendale Wing (5M and 5G), provides care to approximately 3,400 women and their families during their birthing experience.

5G has an early labour lounge, a triage/assessment room, nine labour, birth recovery rooms (LBRs) and two Operating Rooms.

5M has 26 postpartum beds.

The length of stay is approximately 24 hours following a vaginal birth and approximately 48 hours following a Caesarean birth.

Things To Bring To The Hospital

Paperwork

  • Ontario Health Card, plus any extended hospital insurance information
  • St. Joseph's Health Centre “blue card”, if you have one. If not, you will receive one at your next appointment or when you're admitted (You do not have to call to get one.)
  • A pen to fill out forms

For Mom

  • 1-2 pairs of pyjamas and a robe
  • Slippers
  • 1 supportive or nursing bra
  • 4 pairs of underpants
  • Toothbrush, tooth paste, deodorant, and tissues
  • Any other toiletries or cosmetics you may need
  • Large sanitary pads
  • Loose-fitting clothes to wear home
  • 1 pillow
  • Addresses/ phone numbers

For Baby

  • 1 package of small size diapers
  • Vaseline
  • Wipes
  • 3 - 4 undershirts
  • 3 - 4 sleepers
  • 3 - 4 receiving blankets
  • Outerwear to suit the weather
  • Car Seat – please read the instructions for the child securing harness and proper car installation BEFORE coming to the hospital to bring baby home

What NOT to Bring

  • Jewellery, valuables, credit cards or much money

It's time to go to the hospital if …

  • Your bag of waters breaks (your "membranes rupture").
  • You have heavy bleeding (bright red or clots) from the vagina.
  • You are having contractions every 5 minutes (unless your doctor tells you to come earlier). Ask your doctor or midwife what their guidelines are for when you should go to the hospital.

Where to go when you are in labour…

Parking

You may park in the Health Centre garage or at any designated paid parking area.

Enter

Enter St. Joseph's Health Centre through any entrance (except Sunnyside). Take an elevator to the 5th floor and go to the Glendale Wing (5G), to the Family Birthing Centre (Labour & Delivery). Go to the Nursing Station in this area. While the nursing staff admit you, your support person or partner will be asked to complete the admission paperwork in the office located on the same floor, 5G.

Midwives

Midwives have been providing care at St. Joseph’s Health Centre since 1994. There are currently two midwifery practices with privileges at St. Joseph’s Health Centre: Midwife Alliance and Kensington Midwives. Perinatal Bereavement

The Family Birthing Centre and the Health Centre’s Spiritual and Religious Care Department hold an annual interfaith Baby Memorial Service the first Wednesday in June.

This special ceremony is held for families who wish to honour their infants who have died during the past year. This annual service is held in the Health Centre’s Chapel , located on the second floor of the Morrow Wing.
