Preparing for an Operation

Once in the operating room, your family can wait for you in the Family Waiting Area, located on the second floor of the Barnicke Wing, just down the hall from the Day of Surgery area. This room is open for relatives and friends to wait, and to meet with your doctor after your operation.

After the operation, you will spend time recovering from the anaesthesia in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). Your stay in the PACU may be from one to three hours. From PACU, you will be transferred to the Day of Surgery area if you are going home the same day or, if staying overnight, you will be transferred to an inpatient bed. Please note that only one visitor per patient is permitted in the Day of Surgery area. For the inpatient units, two visitors at a time are permitted.
