St. Joseph’s Health Centre has taken steps to assist our deaf and hard-of-hearing patients to be more comfortable during their stay with us. The following services and equipment are available:
Amplified Telephone
This is for people with moderate hearing loss. It is hearing aid compatible and has volume control. Please ask you nurse or health care provider if you need one.
Baby Sound Monitor
Transmits signal to flashing lamp or “bed shaker” when the baby cries. It is available at the nursing station.
Pocket Talker/Sound Unit
This is a one-to-one communication device that amplifies the voice of the speaker to headphones worn by the listener. The volume may be adjusted. Ask your nurse or health care provider about using a pocket talker.
Sign Language
Certified American Sign Language Interpreter Services are available. Please advise the staff so they can make necessary arrangements for you. For patients with scheduled appointments, please call the Interpreter Services Department in advance so that we can schedule the interpreter for you.
Televisions
Closed-captioned televisions are available upon request from the television rental service.
Uniphone (TTY/TDD)
Portable combination telephone and teletypewriter with voice carry over. Please ask your nurse or health care provider.
