Emergency Department Navigational Video

St. Joseph's Emergency Department is committed to understanding the unique needs of our newcomer and immigrant communities around the hospital.

To better meet the needs of newcomers living in our community, several newcomer and immigrant community service agencies asked St. Joseph's to develop a tool to assist those with Limited English Proficiency in their experience accessing the Emergency Department.

To foster a 'newcomer friendly experience' in accessing St. Joseph's Emergency Department, the Emergency Department (ED) Navigational Videos were created to provide patients with information on what they can expect when coming to the ED.

The videos are available in the five top local languages, including Cantonese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tibetan, as well as English. To view the video in the language of your choice, please click on one of the following links:

St. Joseph's Health Centre thanks the many community members from diverse newcomer populations who participated in the development of these videos. Their insightful stories, comments and recommendations helped to guide the video's key messages.

We are also grateful to the community service providers who gave their time and assistance with the necessary word and audio translation for this project.

Finally, we want to acknowledge St. Joseph's Emergency Department and other staff, volunteers and the members of the Newcomers' Population Working Group for their ongoing support and guidance in creating this video.
