Elementary School Program
St. Joseph's Health Centre understands the importance of providing children with a stimulating, creative and fun learning experience. The Health and Education Program is a unique hospital initiative that is offered to children in our local community.
Every alternate Wednesday during the school year, elementary school students get a chance to visit their local hospital to discover what a typical day is like at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Students learn about the importance of wearing safety gear, staying active, eating healthy and striving to succeed in school. A wide variety of their senses including touch, smell, viewing, and listening are incorporated into their learning. In addition, there is a wealth of opportunity for interacting with staff from many departments, including our Emergency, Diagnostic Services, Fracture Clinic, Outpatient Rehabilitation, Laboratory, and the Paediatric unit.
The tour is designed to provide information that coincides with their school curriculum and reinforces their learning through a positive experience. In addition, the Program serves to help dispel any fears and intimidation that children may have about hospitals, and to encourage them to think of St. Joseph's as part of their community.
