Preceptors

It is our hope that you have a strong interest in helping to shape today’s medical trainees! As a preceptor, you act as a guide, mentor and role model for trainees at all stages of their medical education.

Rotation Process

The University of Toronto receives a steady stream of applications for rotations at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. In addition, the Office of Medical Education is in regular contact with interested learners to provide rotation and preceptor information.

As a preceptor, you may receive rotation requests from the University of Toronto and the Office of Medical Education to arrange rotations in your service.

How Can the Office of Medical Education Help You?

The Office of Medical Education offers administrative support to physicians who chose to take medical trainees into their practice and the Health Centre. In addition to credentialing learners, we aid in: Program development and expansion, creation and enhancement of department welcome packages, facilitation of faculty appointments and tracking of preceptor-learner schedules.

The Office of Medical Education is also happy to provide support during Continuing Education events, the formation of promotional educational documents, and much more!

Teaching Stipends and Funding

The University of Toronto is currently able to offer a modest stipend for teaching. All physicians at St. Joseph’s can choose whether they would like their teaching stipend issued to a group account or to be paid out individually. Stipends are received by the Office of Medical Education from the University of Toronto and are verified and paid out quarterly.

Based on the 2011-2012 fiscal year, funding for preceptors was paid out based on $1000.00 per 4 week block (28 days) or approximately $5.10 a day. Funding is subject to change, so please ensure you check with the Office of Medical Education for any updates or inquiries.
