Medical Education

Dr. Jerry M. Maniate, MD, M.Ed, FRCPC

Department of Medical Education & Scholarship

St. Joseph's Health Centre is taking strategic steps to position our community teaching hospital as a leader in education and learning. Building on a strong 75 year history in health professions education, along with significant growth and investment in medical education over the past 18 months, the Office of the Medical Education is transitioning to become the new Department of Medical Education & Scholarship (DMES).

Dr. Jerry Maniate, former Director of Medical Education has been appointed as the inaugural Chief of Medical Education & Scholarship. In his new position, Dr. Maniate will establish the foundation of the DMES and the role it plays in health professions education at St. Joe’s, within the Toronto West community it serves and with the University of Toronto.

The DMES will continue to work closely with our Interprofessional Education & Collaboration Department to promote education and learning. The strong working partnership between these two departments has lead to the creation of our first Interprofessional Education Strategic plan. The plan provides a footprint that will guide the Health Centre as we build on our successes in fostering the best learning environment for students and to support continuing education initiatives for physicians and staff.

Currently we have over 600 medical trainees (medical students, residents and fellows) resulting in nearly 23,555 medical trainee days, and over 200 faculty members at the University of Toronto. These student numbers are a direct reflection of our growing emphasis on health professions education at St. Joe’s and our strong belief in the important role that education and learning plays in providing high quality and safe patient-centred care.

The DMES will continue to move our organization towards reaching our Vision to be Canada’s Best Community Teaching Hospital.
