St. Joseph's Health Centre celebrated our 3rd Annual Interprofessional Education Week event from October 18 to 22, 2010!

This was the 3rd year for our exciting home-grown event that celebrates SJHC’s culture of interprofessional learning and collaboration and also showcases how diverse groups of people learn with, from and about each other. This collaboration translates into providing exceptional patient care here at St. Joe’s.

Dr. Joshua Tepper, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Human Resources Strategy Division and Maria Tassone, Director of The University of Toronto Centre for Interprofessional Education were guest speakers at our IPE Breakfast Forum held Oct 18, 2010.

We kicked off the 2010 Interprofessional Education Week event with our annual Breakfast Forum welcoming two very exciting guest speakers this year:

  • Dr. Joshua Tepper, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Human Resources Strategy Division, who presented “IPC: The right answer to the right problem at the right time; and
  • Maria Tassone, Director of The University of Toronto Centre for Interprofessional Education, who presented  Transforming Teaching, Learning and Care: The Next Horizon at St. Joseph’s.

Members of the Health Centre's Leadership Team and representatives from various community partners, as well as our partners in education, were invited to hear from a number of speakers on the important work being done at the Health Centre to move interprofessional practice and collaboration forward.

Carolyn Baker, President and CEO at St. Joseph's, addressed the crowd and talked about the importance of collaboration and how we provide an environment for our health care providers to acquire new knowledge in order to improve the health of the communities we serve – which is critical in helping us support our culture of Inquiry and Innovation.

Elizabeth McLaney, Manager of Interprofessional Education and Michael Heffer, Director of Interprofessional Practice and Pharmacy talked about exciting advancements we have made over the last year towards our vision for collaboration including, but not limited to:

  • Successfully participating in a University of Toronto Interprofessional Education Curriculum Pilot where we had the 3rd highest number of pilot activities completed on site, high physician involvement, and the highest number of different professions participating.
  • Internally, we have launched a journal club for staff, lunch and learn sessions, faculty development sessions, webinars/teleconferences, created student interprofessional education information on our hospital’s intranet and continue to celebrate IPE Week.
  • Hosting our first IPE Conference on Arthritis Management gave us the opportunity to share interprofessional learning not only with our own staff and physicians, but also with our referring family practice physicians and specialists. This half day continuing education opportunity focused on prevention and management of various forms of arthritis, with an emphasis on upper and lower extremities.

We also celebrated the Diabetes Management and Education Clinic at St. Joe’s, which has been modeled after the very successful Assertive Interprofessional Respiratory (AIR) team. This is a great example of how interprofessional initiatives and programs are helping to Put Patients First and Enhance the Health of the Communities we Serve. Click here to read more about this exciting team, which was one of several interprofessional stories featured in our annual newspaper insert that we create for our local community papers.

The IPE newspaper insert and special issue of our internal newsletter, Connections, shares with our community members the many different roles that are needed to deliver patient care and how we foster teamwork and collaboration among all our health care professionals.

This year’s event marked the final celebration of our TD Learning is for Life Scholarships and we would like to sincerely thank TD Bank Financial Group for their support and partnership over the last 5 years.

In 2006, the TD Bank Financial Group generously sponsored a scholarship fund pledging $250,000 in funding over five years to help support the life-long learning needs of our regulated health care professionals. Over the last five years, 110 scholarships have been awarded to help our staff continue to develop professionally.

On Wednesday, October 20, we hosted our annual IP Skills Fair, a home-grown event where our health care professionals meet to learn ‘with, from and about each other' through interactive displays and booths.

1st place – Inpatient Pharmacy

2nd place – Outpatient Pharmacy

3rd place – Infection Control

This year we had over 40 booths representing more than 20 disciplines from across the Health Centre. St. Joseph's also welcomed 20 high school students from the Toronto Catholic District School Board to our Skills Fair and a group of nurses from the CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses.

We would like to thank the presenters of our two special lunch time feature presentations:

  • Video Assisted Bronchoscopy Demonstration presented by Dr. Maurice Blitz, Thoracic and Foregut Surgeon and Ginny Martins, RRT, Charge Respiratory Therapist, and
  • ‘Lights, Camera, Live-Action & Debrief,’ a live action hybrid simulation hosted by the Michener Institute’s Radiological Technology Program and presented by Jennifer Lo, Simulation Specialist & Robin Darling, Simulation Actor.

Last year we launched a new component to the Skills Fair - challenging all of our IP participants to a poster contest that explained how their particular area/role contributed to enhancing patient access and flow throughout the Health Centre.

This year, our IP participants created posters that demonstrate how their profession contributes to our Big Aim of reducing adverse events by 50% by March 31st, 2011.

Our winners this year are:

1st place – Inpatient Pharmacy
2nd place – Outpatient Pharmacy
3r d place – Infection Control
