A hair-cut also turned into $15,000 for St. Joe’s. Rob Duncan and family hosted The Great Duncan Hair Affair as a tribute event to Joyce Duncan, Rob’s mother, who spent her final days at St. Joe’s following a courageous battle with cancer. Rob said St. Joe’s was there for the family when it mattered and they wanted to pay tribute and help others at the same time by raising funds through a haircutting event. The event attracted almost 100 people to see Rob shave his head, raising $4,000, and more than another $11,000 was raised by reaching out to family and friends.

On September 12, St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundation hit a hole-in-one at the 9th Annual Fall Classic, raising $142,000 gross to support the greatest needs of the Health Centre. This was the highest grossing tournament in our history. Under sunny skies, 25 teams teed off at Islington Golf Club, and everyone had the chance beforehand to test drive a Porsche or Audi, thanks to presenting sponsor Pfaff Audi. Special thanks to our tournament co-chairs John Clarke and Mike Moro. Thanks to Michael Talmage for being our presenting sponsor and for agreeing to co-chair our 10th anniversary tournament that will take place on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Thank you to all of our patients and families, staff and physicians who bought a brick for $100 to help build the Our Lady of Mercy Wing. Your support raised $52,000 toward the new facility that means even better care for our friends and neighbours, close to home. For many of you, your brick represented a memory of someone special, your gratitude to St. Joe’s for outstanding care, or your commitment to supporting health care in our community. Maureen Lynett was nervous. She was referred to St. Joe’s for gallbladder surgery and she was concerned about having surgery because of her heart condition. But she was relieved immediately after meeting Dr. Shiva Jayaraman, an expert in Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Tract surgery who was recruited from the United States. “Dr. Jayaraman made sure I was fully-prepared,” says Maureen. “I knew I was in good hands.”

Now Maureen is recognizing her great care by naming Dr. Jayaraman to the My St. Joe’s Circle. The Circle is a group of people who have been honoured for the difference they make in the lives of our friends and neighbours.

“Often patients and their families are looking for a way of expressing their thanks,” says Maria Dyck, Foundation President. “This program is a way to recognize great care by making a gift to support the Health Centre’s greatest priorities.”

Every other Tuesday, Joe Cimicata has a view of the lake, spends four quality hours with his daughter Aimee, and catches up on some reading. The owner of a near-by Home Hardware says he feels at home despite the fact that he is undergoing his second round of chemotherapy. “I am grateful to the doctors, surgeons and staff who treat me like family.”

Joe has been through two life-saving operations at St. Joe’s—one for colon cancer, the other to remove cancer in his liver. He is also a donor. “I wanted to support what I know is the best hospital around to help others who require surgery and treatment for cancer.”
