Patient Care Story - The Boyle Family

On the chilly night of a major electrical blackout in the Parkdale-High Park area, St. Joseph's Health Centre was warm and bright - ready to welcome little Samuel into the world.

At 3 a.m. soon to be parents, Robertson and Christine Boyle found themselves without heat or hydro in their home as Christine's labour began. With frayed nerves they made their way to SJHC, their community teaching hospital, and were welcomed by our staff in the obstetrics department and Family Birthing Centre.

"I was struck by the hospitable kindness and most generous apportionment of their time and helpful counsel throughout our stay,” said Robertson. "Their stoic professionalism was beyond reproach from the moment we arrived.”

Robertson fondly recalls the moment of birth when the support team was called in. The room was abuzz with all sorts of people and a little cheer-leading section formed for Christine as she went into the final pushing phase.

"The quality of care provided by St. Joseph's Health Centre then, during the birth of our son and, as it has continued since, with the various support services, such as the Mothers' Group, the Just For Kids Clinic, and others my wife has experienced, is simply the finest example of high-quality, conscientious care available today,” said Robertson.

The birth of a child is a new and exciting experience for first time parents. The Boyle family was so impressed and overjoyed with their experience that they felt compelled to write a letter of thanks to all who helped them as this unforgettable journey began.

"In the days following our departure, we have learned quite a few things about baby care – but the most important gift is the great joy that comes with parenthood. And we owe a great debt of gratitude to you, one and all, for this joy. We will never forget you.”
