Past Projects

St. Joseph's Health Centre is constantly striving to provide better health care to the members of our community and those outside it. To this effect we have completed several redevelopment projects to accomplish just that.

Underground Parking Garage
Completed in the Spring of 2009, our new underground parking garage has also opened. The new patient care wing is being built on top of the garage, which will accommodate parking for 300 cars. The new garage is currently only open for staff parking while the new wing is being built.

Main Entrance
Following an official ribbon cutting ceremony on October 5, 2005, the new Main Entrance was officially opened on December 8, 2005. Funded in part by a $5 million donation to the Health Centre Foundation by Mr. Eugene Melnyk, the Vera and Ferdinand Melnyk Pavilion is an architecturally spectacular, welcoming and fully accessible portal to the Health Centre.

Mental Health Unit
Officially opened on October 5, 2005 by Ontario Lieutenant Governor James. K. Bartleman, our newly renovated and expanded seventh floor Mental Health Unit provides staff and patients with a modern and supportive healing environment.

Glendale House
Designed to promote wellness and recovery from substance abuse in a residential setting, our new state-of-the-art Withdrawal Management Services program was opened on February 6, 2006. Housing 26 beds for both male and female clients, Glendale House is the first such facility to open in the GTA since the early 1990’s, and one of only two in the GTA providing Withdrawal Management Service for women.

Community Renal Centre
The Community Renal Centre opened its doors to peritoneal and pre-dialysis clinic patients as of Monday, April 19, 2004. The Community Renal Centre was designed with comfort, convenience and privacy in mind. This spacious, 13,000 square foot facility will house three distinct services within the Renal Therapy program: haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and pre-dialysis education. The location was chosen to provide these services close to the heart of the community we serve.

BMO Financial Group Ambulatory Care Centre
Formerly known as the Community Health Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Centre officially opened the BMO Financial Group Ambulatory Care Centre on Tuesday, September 2, 2003.

Surgery: Pre-Admission Centre, Surgical Day Care Unit and Operating Suites
Over the winter of 2002 and into early 2003 the Surgery program experienced major renovations including two new Operating Suites located next to the new Pre-Admission and Surgical Day Care for greater convenience. Suites with the newest technology available including minimally invasive equipment and video and robotic assisted equipment allows surgeons to make smaller, more precise incisions. For our patients, this means a shorter length of stay, and a quicker, less painful recovery.

Intensive Care Unit
The relocation of the Intensive Care Unit in late 2002 brought the unit into close proximity with the ER and Operating Rooms, meaning all core critical care services are grouped together for more efficient care. The area is equipped to accommodate 26 beds, an increase from the previous 15, and has more space for patients and their families.

Dr. H. James Watt Oncology/Haematology Unit
The Dr. H. James Watt Oncology/Haematology Unit opened in the spring of 2002 and has one of the premiere locations in the Health Centre: the 6th floor, with huge windows overlooking Lake Ontario. People now receive cancer treatment in a beautiful, warm, family-friendly environment. These changes, as well as new technology and scholarships for oncology nurses, are partly due to the Lori’s Room Fund, established by Lorna and the late Doug Martin to honour their daughter Lorna-Lynn who died in 1996.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services
In May of 2002 the sixth floor of the East Wing became home to the Outpatient Rehabilitation Services. In a spacious environment, boasting a beautiful view, our team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech pathologists provide our patients with comprehensive assessment, treatment and education.

Emergency Department
The new Emergency Department opened to patients on April 25, 2002 and features a unique design that to specifically meet the needs of the patient population served by St. Joseph’s. The ER is made up of four ‘mini-ERs’ – Paediatrics, Urgent Care, Ambulatory-Fast Track and Mental Health. With an additional 15,000 square feet of space, the ED expanded to better serve the ever increasing volumes on one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the City of Toronto.

Education Centre and Board Rooms
Providing much needed meeting space for the staff, physicians and students at St. Joseph’s Health Centre the Education Centres were constructed beside the Cafeteria. A Large and Small Boardroom provide the Health Centre’s Board of Directors with dedicated meeting space on site and a more formal venue for hosting meetings with our partners in care.
