Fast Facts

Read some fast facts about Phase 2 of the Our Lady of Mercy Patient Care Wing construction.

  • The Our Lady of Mercy Patient Care Wing will be a 130,000 sq.ft 4-storey building.
  • It will be completed by 2012
  • The patient care wing will house a new state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a new Paediatric Unit, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, and an expanded Family Birthing Centre, and three new inpatient areas housing a total of 92 beds.
  • The patient care wing is being built on top of the new three-storey underground parking garage, which can accommodate parking for 300 cars.
  • Vanbots is the construction company for the new patient care wing
  • On a typical construction day for this project, we will see anywhere between 40 to 100 workers on the job site.
  • The various trades and workers Vanbots will have on site are: Carpenters, labourer's, electricians, plumbers, HVAC installers, drywaller's, painters, tapers, carpet & tile installer, med-gas, controls, insulators, millworkers, glazers, masons, concrete swampers and finishers, steel workers, roofers, elevator installers, siding flashing & finishes and landscapers just to name a few.

The new Our Lady of Mercy Wing will be home to:

  • The new NICU, with 20 bassinettes (an increase from the current 12 bassinettes)
  • An expanded Family Birth Centre to accommodate 4,000 births annually (an increase from the over 3,300 births we had here last year)
  • A new Paediatrics Unit which will include 6 surgical day care beds, 6 medical day care beds, and 6 observation beds
  • Approximately 92 adult impatient beds
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
