Volunteers Make a Difference: St. Joseph's Celebrates Volunteer Week
By Jillian Cramer

title

As an important community link, volunteers donate their time and energy to serve the population at St. Joseph's Health Centre. During National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, we honour our 215 volunteers by celebrating and recognizing the vital contributions these valued individuals make to the Health Centre.

At St. Joseph's, this week has a special place in our hearts. Our volunteers selflessly donate their time and spend hours providing emotional support for our patients and their families. Volunteers act as liaisons between patients, visitors, family and staff, playing a crucial role in ensuring quality care.

In celebration of Volunteer Week, St. Joseph's is holding its Annual Volunteer Recognition Night on April 21. At the event, 29 deserving volunteers will receive awards in recognition of the gift of time they give to the Health Centre. It is also a chance for St. Joe's staff to volunteer their time and help celebrate this important group of people who play a key role in Putting Patients First.

"There is never a shortage of staff who come to volunteer at this event to show their appreciation for the contributions volunteers bring to St. Joe's," Maureen Ford, Manager, Volunteer Services.

St. Joseph's is always looking for volunteers who are good listeners and understand the need for emotional support in the health care setting. There is a lot of variety in the volunteer opportunities available and everyone receives special training and participates in an orientation to the Health Centre.

"Volunteerism is a fantastic thing. It's great for the organization and great for the individual," said Ford. "We believe that volunteering needs to be mutually beneficial. That is why we try to match the needs of the Health Centre with the goals of the volunteer."

Whether volunteering to gain experience for future career goals, as a way to say thank-you for the care received here, or a means to stay active and involved, our volunteers are valued and celebrated. "We are really lucky. We have fantastic volunteers," said Ford.

Please join us in thanking our wonderful volunteers for all the support they provide for patients, families, visitors and staff.
