SJHC and Gerard Kennedy participate in a 20 Minute Make Over for Earth Week
For the 8th straight year, staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre stopped for 20 minutes this afternoon to help make our community a cleaner and greener place. The annual 20 minute make over event is something the Health Centre looks forward to every year as part of our Earth Week celebrations.
This is one of the many initiatives that make up the hospital's green commitment in our Strategic Plan. Using our resources wisely and being mindful of our impact on the environment is at the forefront in how we deliver care and provide services to our surrounding communities. This year we welcomed Gerard Kennedy, Liberal candidate for Parkdale-High Park, who rolled up his sleeves and helped pick up trash and litter right along side our staff.
SJHC Takes Part in Earth Hour
On Saturday, March 27th St. Joseph's Health Centre turned out the lights in support of Earth Hour 2010.
Through a major communications push that included targeted emails, a poster campaign, messaging through Josie Green our spokesperson for the Environmental Management Committee and information on our website SJHC was able to switch off the lights in our Mechanical and Electrical rooms, all nonessential exterior lighting and illuminated signs, all nonessential lighting on the OLM construction site that did not impact life safety, and lights and computers in individual office spaces.
All patient care areas were also asked to turn off all nonessential lighting that would not impact patient care. Our patients were informed of our involvement in Earth Hour through letters on their dinner meal trays and were encouraged to participate.
According to the WWF Canada website, Canadians in more than 300 cities and towns turned off their lights and conserved their energy in support of Earth Hour. Many events took place to mark the hour-long world wide movement including a candle lit walk in Roncesvalles village organized by the local Business Improvement Area.
Thanks to everyone who turned off their lights and computers to help St. Joseph's Health Centre's commitment to Use our Resources Wisely and reduce our ecological footprint.
